À propos de Yukihide

I have 5+ years of experience teaching mathematics up to and including the undergraduate level in Italy and the United States, alongside years of experience communicating pure mathematics at the graduate level.
It has always been a great joy to teach mathematics, and among the most rewarding has been to tutor students one-on-one, where I can get to know each student's strengths and tendencies and see them succeed in what was once challenging.

I obtained a dual master's degree from the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany and the University of Padova in Italy (Masters 1+2), and am expected to obtain a Ph.D. in pure mathematics from the University of Padova in June 2022.

Welcome! I tutor students in math of all kinds up to the undergraduate level.

Math is really, really hard. School often doesn't make it any easier.

Classrooms have to address dozens of students at a time, and the way a course is presented in the classroom might not make sense for everyone. That's normal: the way each person thinks about math is too individual for a universal recipe. From my 5+ years of tutoring students in high school and college mathematics, I've discovered that math makes sense to everyone in a different way, and that no matter how challenging a concept might be to someone, there is always something that makes it click.

It's my mission to guide every student to a personal understanding of whatever they're struggling with so that not only do they pass their next exam, they have a solid conceptual foundation for whatever they study going forward.

-- Why a tutor?
Textbooks today present math as a clean, logical progression of ideas and formulas. Each chapter builds on the ones before like a house built brick by brick. This is logically sound and the end result is a nice reference book. But here's the thing: this is not how mathematicians do mathematics! Do you think that the mathematicians who first discovered these formulas and concepts took such a straight line? Definitely not! In practice mathematicians go through twists and turns, over months or even years, to arrive at results which look so inevitable on paper. Their ideas, which would be so helpful in understanding a concept, unfortunately get lost in the cleanliness of the presentation. This is why textbooks are often not a good guide when something doesn't make sense or you want to know why something is true. I believe that what a tutor can contribute most is the unwritten intuition behind the math, honed over years of study: once a student sees the why, everything starts to fall into place.

-- What does a tutoring session look like?
My goal in each tutoring session is a dialogue to see how you think about the subject, what already makes sense for you, and build on top of that to organically master the material. We'll work together to identify what is in the way of your understanding and craft a perspective that makes sense for you. It will be a cyclical process of clarifying and reinforcing. If you already know what you're confused by, we'll zoom in and work out the details. We might work on some exercises to probe for places you get stuck, or I could explain some nuances or perspectives on the topic that might not be taught in a course.

No matter what, the direction will be tailored to what you need.
