Parfait ! When I decided to book several lessons with Mark, I was stuck at 6.5 for the IELTS writing part. I was quite desperate and totally lost, not knowing what to do in order to take my english to the next level and I can tell you that I don’t regret my choice regarding Mark. He gave me the feedback and the guidance that I needed to achieve the band 7 required by the university of my dream. He is really patient, and goal oriented, focusing only on what you need to improve to make a difference! I can’t thank him enough for the results that I got! Parfait ! Mark is confident, calm, friendly and professional. He understands your needs and teaches accordingly, Whether you need a certain score in IELTS or either you just want to improve your english level he is there to help you. Even if you don't have enough time he still manages to improve your knowledge and even after a couple of weeks you find yourself way better than you were before. Btw his price is really affordable. I heartily do recommend him for anybody willing to learn english, just stick to him and you will be very glad for it. Again I thank you very much Mark for making my daughter and son pass their IELTS exams although they had such a limited time to get prepared. What else can I say? Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
I am a native English speaker, having grown up and studied in the UK in an English family. I had many inspiring English teachers at school and university who taught me what I know about the language. I hope to pass on this knowledge to my students.
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
Many are attracted to British English, particularly that of the Royal Family, because of the cultural siignificance of them. This in fact represents a very small percentage of English speakers as American English increases its influence globally. As a living language, we can look to politicians as much pop stars for a truer representation of the language's culture.
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?
In English, there is often a culture of criticising softly, which I like because it shows we do not have a culture of complaining. I quite like this because as the children's saying goes, 'If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.' The linguistic tendency is to not make a drama of a little problem (but the flipside is maybe we don't celebrate great things enough).
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Teaching English matters to me because of how much it matters to my students. To pass an exam, to be accepted for a new job using English, to be able to move to a new country. It's a life-changing job.
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Learning something is not always the same for two people. The same applies to learning English. Based on one's native language, and how one prefers to learn, the main difficulty can vary. One person may find the grammar easy but conversations difficult, while another might have the oppostie experience. It helps to have a teacher who can listen so that he/she is in tune with this.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
When I studied English aged 15 I believed I was not very good at the subject, but with a change of teacher the next few years I achieved full marks (100%) in my examination aged 17. English is a subject that can be taught, and you can learn to be excellent in English too.
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Although this question is primarily aimed at teachers who do not speak English natively, I would say living in a non-English speaking country made me appreciate what it is like to study a language other than your own. Living abroad various times has helped me to understand what social, professional and personal improvements are needed when learning a language immersed in another country.
What makes you a Superprof in language?
The three key things are knowledge of English, understanding of you and similar students, and wanting to do the best job for you.
