À propos de Violette

Je propose des cours de langue en présentiel à Sheffield où je réside depuis et ainsi qu'en visio-conférence sur Skype. Je suis professeure titulaire de l’Éducation Nationale Française et ai obetenu le Qualified Teacher Status au R.U en 2017. Je suis titulaire d’un Master en littérature anglaise, d’une licence en philosophie et bénéficie d’une année d’expérience d’enseignement du français à l’Université de Sheffield (2011-2012). J’ai également un diplôme en traduction (anglais vers le français) et de relecture / correction. Depuis que je travaille comme professeur indépendant, j’ai eu l’opportunité de donner d’enseigner le français à des étudiants ainsi qu’a des élèves du secondaire, de maternelle et de primaire. Je suis passionnée de littérature, de poésie, d’art et de musique je j’essaie d’incorporer à mes cours de manière pertinente.

-Si la leçon est annulée le jour de la session, alors des frais d’annulation correspondant la moitié du tarif horaire (soit £12.50) doivent être versés a l’enseignant en compensation du temps de préparation de la leçon et du créneau horaire qui aura été bloqué et laissé vacant.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

    I teach both French and English. French is my native tongue whereas I studied English at MA level at university to then qualify as a secondary school English teacher in France. Upon moving to the UK and starting to work as an independent teacher, I decided to diversify and to teach French in addition to English, knowing that previous successful experiences in teaching my mother tongue, coupled with my understanding and appreciation of the French language and an off-the-beaten-track yet very methodological teaching approach would yield promising results.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

    I will start with my native French culture and choose the character of Cyrano de Bergerac as fictionalised by the great 19th century poet and playwright Edmond Rostand. I must have read Rostand's play a good five times and it never fails to astonish me by its brilliance. There is such perfect alchemy between Rostand's fervent and flawless prose and the flamboyance of his Cyrano; a character so nuanced and so expressive, that it makes this piece of literature a uniquely symbiotic piece of art in my opinion. It makes me laugh, it makes me think, it inspires me and the finale never fails to make me cry. To be noted that this famous character with this extraordinary long nose was based (however very loosely) on a no less colourful historical figure, the 17th century writer Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac.

    As for the English-speaking world, the late poet Ted Hughes has had a great impact on my appreciation of the English language. As an admirer of his work, his way of conveying a feeling or image with mythical flair and visceral expression never ceases to captivate me.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

    -In French, one of my favourite idiomatic phrases or motto is "Haut les coeurs!" (equivalent to "Chin up!" in English), maybe because it's something my mom used to say a lot to give me courage when I felt distraught and sad. "coeur" is French for "heart" and "haut" is French for "high", the idea is to take courage and to rise above trouble, to not let one's heart be overwhelmed by grief or fear or any negative feeling to the point that it cripples them. I like the sound of it too.
    -A type of behaviour or trait of character that is evocative of a certain "frenchness" to me is the idea that it is important to voice and manifest healthy angers or revolts, in the fashion of the great French priest Abbé Pierre (1912-2007) who spent most of his life fighting to help the poor and the homeless in France and around the world.

    -As for a typical phrase in English: I reside in South Yorkshire and something that struck me first as I was familiarising myself with the Yorshire ways were colloquialisms, especially how in many situations (on the bus, on the street, at a shop etc.) people call each other "my love", "love", "my lovely", "sweetheart" even if they've never met each other and no matter how old they are. I used to find it very odd at first but I think it's a very sweet and heart-warming thing to say to another person.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

    -Speaking French matters to me because it forms part of my legacy as a social and cultural being. Teaching French allows me to share a bit of that legacy and to show how rich, imaginative and nuanced the French language is and what pleasure can one derive from speaking and mastering it to a certain degree.

    -Speaking English is just as important to me as speaking French. In my everyday life (my family life, my social life, my professional life), I use English more than French. So much so that it has become my preferred language when it comes to expressing my feelings and emotions. I feel I am at a stage now where I have truly become intimate with this language and reached a point where it has become an integral part of who I am.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

    For both languages that I teach, French and English, I would answer that the difficulties will vary from one student to another and it is in the tutor's gift to gauge a learner's strengths and weaknesses, to adapt their learning methods accordingly in order to get the best out of them. Some will find themselves very at ease with grammar, even complex grammar, as they are good at deconstructing a language and understanding its structures, but may struggle with pronunciation and listening/understanding. Some learners love structure while others thrive with more freedom and more organic ways of learning; so it really depends.
    On the whole, learners need to be given a lot of opportunities to express themselves in order to activate and make sense of the structures and vocabulary they have been in learning in context. For most language-learners, I find that the main target is to feeling confident speaking the language they are learning and getting to a stage where they are at ease in a context of spontaeous conversation, where they need to understand the other person as well as make themselves understood.

    -That said, from a learning perspective, I find that one of the most difficult or intimidating thing to get to grips with when learning French is the grammar due to its many rules, some of which are very strict (therefore easier to learn and apply) while others are a lot more context-dependent, with many variations, and therefore more difficult to assimilate. Also, depending on what the learner's native tongue is, their capacity to understand and assimlate the rules will equally vary. An Italian learner, for instance, may be able to make sense of the French grammar much more easily and quicker because their language will share a lot of similarities with the French language (similar gender-based grammar and spelling rules for instance, as well as a lot of latin-derived vocabulary).
    In comparison, I find English grammar much more simple and accessible (no male/female nouns or adjectives for instance), although it also has its complexities and subtleties. The best way to learn the grammar is to make sure that the basics are understood, learnt, reinforced and to then give the students plenty opportunities to revisit and reactivate them as their learning advances towards more and more complexity.

    -In English, some of the main difficulties that students encounter when they learn the grammar is the expression of modality because it uses a wide range of auxiliaries, semi-auxiliaries etc and because it requires a good understanding of the context to be used accurately. A beginner in English might also struggle with the use of Do as an auxiliry (i.e. a grammatical tool to build interrogation, negation, yes/no answers and questions tags) and the use of Do as an ordinary, i.e. non-auxiliary, verb. Other than that, the Present Perfect is also a tense/ grammatical aspect that usually takes longer for learners to assimilate but, again, difficulties will vary from one student to another. From a vocabulary perspective, the multitude of phrasal verbs, and how one particular preposition or particle can change the meaning of the whole verb and thus of a whole phrase can also feel like a daunting (yet very rich and fun) learning experience!
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

    When I was in Secondary School, it is my passion for music and films that propelled my learning of English. I've alway whole-heartedly delved into the things I like. Reading and trying to understand the lyrics of my favourite artists' songs and learning them by heart for instance, or watching films in their original version from an early age contributed a lot to the broadening of my vocabulary and the developing of my ear for the language's musicality. I remember once finding the script of the film The Graduate in English online, around the age of 14-15 and translating it (it was probably a very poor translation but this is how determined I was). I would do the same with articles and interviews of my favourite musicians/bands, like Elliott Smith, for example.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

    Being a permanent resident in the UK has increased my understanding of the English language and enabled me to acquire a wider range of vocabulary and idioms. To have a solid grasp of English grammar (that I studied in depth in my Uni years and while training as a teacher in France) while also being able to speak the language proficiently is a true advantage.

    My adaptability, my capacity to create original learning material and to personalise it to make it appealing to my learners, my ability to be rigorous and methodological while also allowing space for improvisation and taking into account my learners' creative potential and interests to get them as much involved as possible in the learning process.
