Yulian Stanchev, born in 2004 in the city of Plovdiv, has swiftly ascended the ranks of classical guitarists with his prodigious talent and relentless dedication. From a young age, Yulian exhibited an extraordinary aptitude for music, which has been nurtured through rigorous training and an unwavering passion for the classical guitar.
Yulian's musical journey began at the tender age of seven when he was admitted to the prestigious National School of Music and Dance Art “Dobrin Petkov.” Under the expert tutelage of Valentin and Milena Vulchevi, Yulian's foundational skills in classical guitar were meticulously developed. His early years were marked by intensive practice and a deepening love for the instrument, laying the groundwork for a promising career.
In the academic year 2020/21, Yulian transitioned to studying under Prof. Darko Bageski at the Music Academy in Skopje. This move was pivotal in refining his technique and expanding his musical horizons. Prof. Bageski's mentorship played a crucial role in honing Yulian's skills, enabling him to reach new heights in his performance and artistry.
Demonstrating remarkable versatility, Yulian embarked on mastering the clarinet in the spring of 2020. Under the guidance of Eduard Sarafyan, he swiftly adapted to this new instrument, showcasing his ability to excel in multiple musical disciplines.
Yulian's dedication to his craft is evident in his participation in numerous master classes with world-renowned guitarists. These include sessions with Georgi Vasilev, Giorgos Panetsos, Eric Franceries, Darko Bagevski, Nicola Montella, Michalis Sourninos, Michael Butten, Goran Krivokapic, Gabriel Bianco, Pierre Lelièvre, Atanas Urkuzunov, Sanel Redzic, Jevdet Sahatçiu, Stefan Schmidt, Zoran Anic, Rosen Balkanski, Aleksandar Hadji-Georgievich, and Liviu Georgescu. These experiences have enriched Yulian's technical proficiency and interpretative depth, allowing him to integrate diverse stylistic elements into his performances.
Yulian's concert career is equally distinguished. He has performed as a soloist with the Vratsa Symphony Orchestra, delivering captivating renditions of A. Vivaldi's Concerto D major in May 2017 and F. Carulli's Concerto A major in May 2019. His premiere performance of a guitar concerto by John Baston with the chamber orchestra in Haskovo on Europe Day, May 9, 2018, marked a significant milestone in his career, showcasing his ability to handle complex compositions with ease and flair.
In addition to his solo performances, Yulian has been an active participant in various charitable concerts, using his talent to support worthy causes. Notable performances include his recital at the “Together Again” concert in the garden of Boris Hristov’s house-museum in Sofia on July 14, where he impressed the audience with his delicate vocal beauty and profound sensitivity to intonation and phrasing. Another significant performance was at the “In the World of Classical Music” concert at Trakart Gallery, Plovdiv, on October 17, 2020, where he showcased his proficiency in both the guitar and clarinet.
Yulian's competitive accolades are numerous and prestigious. He has secured top positions in international competitions such as the International Classical Guitar Competition “Marin Goleminov” in Kyustendil, the International Guitar Festival in Pleven, the International Competition “Young Virtuosos” in Sofia, the International Guitar Festival in Nis, Serbia, the International Classical Guitar Competition “Thrace” in Komotini, Greece, the International Competition “Golden Key” in France, the International Competition “Ohrid, I love you” in Ohrid, North Macedonia, the International Competition for Young Performers of Classical Instruments in Pernik, and the International Competition for Classical Music “eMuse 2019.”
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Yulian continued to thrive, winning awards from the ArtFestival International Competition in Tryavna, the International Guitar Festival “Tremolo” in Skopje, North Macedonia, the International Competition “Ohrid, I love you” in Ohrid, North Macedonia, and the International Competition “Flying Stage” in Burgas, Bulgaria. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was awarded the prize of the Union of Bulgarian Musical and Dance Artists during the Days of Arts “Asen Diamandiev” in 2020.
In 2024, Yulian continued his musical journey by pursuing a Bachelor's degree in guitar at the Koninklijk Music Conservatorium in Brussels. This new chapter in his education represents a significant step forward in his artistic development, providing him with the opportunity to immerse himself in a vibrant and internationally recognized musical environment.
Yulian’s commitment to his motto, “Regardless of everything that happens, art, music will always bring us together!” is evident in his unwavering dedication to performance and musical excellence. His active involvement in a guitar and flute chamber duo, and participation in competitions such as the National Radio Competition for Young Instrumentalists and the prestigious International Competition “Concertino Prague” in 2021, further underscore his versatility and commitment to his craft.
Recognized as one of the “Successful Children of Bulgaria” by the Dimitar Berbatov Foundation from 2017 to 2020, Yulian continues to inspire with his musical achievements. His receipt of the “Encho Keriazov” Foundation Award in the “Art” category for 2020 is a testament to his exceptional talent and contributions to the world of classical music.
