À propos de Katie

I have been teaching for a few months, and currently work with 23 adult professionals at levels B1 – C1. The content of my classes include:
• conversation about general and specific topics;
• grammar and tenses;
• new vocabulary and revision of existing knowledge;
• focus on common areas of difficulty (such as prepositions, phrasal verbs, les faux amis, countable and uncountable nouns);
• pronunciation (vowel sounds, the ‘th’, sounding the ‘s’);
• written expression;
• reading for both gist and specific information;
• audiovisual exercises;
• nuances between words.

As part of my CELTA training, I completed 3 hours of teaching practice to pre-intermediate level and 3 hours to upper intermediate level, in classes of up to 9 students. I also completed 6 hours of teaching observation.

I studied French to A-level so appreciate the challenges learners face. I also learned how much of an impact culture, society and customs have on language, and why the same language can actually be very different (such as British English and American English).

My background is very much English-based: I have a degree in creative writing, an A-level in English and my work history includes proofreading and a press office role.

I am a CELTA-qualified native English speaker teaching adults in a professional context. My students come from a variety of professional backgrounds, ranging from financial institutions to engineering and construction enterprises. I conduct lessons by telephone, as well as WebEx, Skype for Business and face-to-face (1:1) classes. As part of my job, I provide feedback after every lesson, source relevant and interesting material, and create handouts on areas of difficulty such as phrasal verbs. I am also very interested in the subtle differences in meaning between words. For example, the words ‘joyful’, ‘delighted’, ‘ecstatic’ and ‘cheerful’ are all related to the emotion of happiness but all used slightly differently.

One of the hardest aspects of learning a language, regardless of level, is overcoming self-consciousness about talking. We become self-conscious when choosing our words, when formulating sentences, when we speak: is this the ‘right’ word? Does this sentence make sense? Does the person think I’m an idiot? And what about my pronunciation? How was that? What do I say now?

The best way to overcome this feeling is to practise. I provide a safe, friendly and relaxed environment where students can talk freely with confidence, knowing that mistakes are welcomed. This may sound strange – you want to get it right, not make mistakes! But mistakes are one of the ways we learn: whether it’s a language or a practical skill such as driving. Specific mistakes are less likely to be made in future when we notice them ourselves, and I encourage students to spot their own errors and self-correct where possible.

I grade my language according to the individual so that students are not overwhelmed or deterred. At the same time, I subtly push students forward to improve at a steady pace. I monitor attentively and respond to queries arising in lessons (whether directly related to the lesson or not). I see myself as a coach working alongside students as an equal partner rather than in the traditional ‘teacher-student’ role. In the same way as a coach, I help students achieve what they are capable of and push them to surpass it. Learning a language should be fun, and even if studying for important exams, it doesn’t have to be a dull process. Everyone has preferred ways of learning (some students may favour textbooks, while others prefer news articles, podcasts or TED talks). I carefully plan lessons in full consultation with students to ensure learning preferences are met. I focus on topics of interest to the student as well as areas which he/she wants to work on. For example, for someone interested in current affairs and struggling with the past perfect tense, I can structure a lesson incorporating both elements. I can also create skills exercises around material students choose themselves.

In addition to post-lesson feedback, I regularly ask students to give me feedback. This is so that I can gauge if our lessons are of benefit and if they aren’t, what we can do together to change things. Everyone benefits from honest and constructive feedback.

I have an awareness of the common obstacles French speakers face when learning English, and support students in overcoming these. For example: ‘make’ and ‘do’, ‘propose’ and ‘offer’, ‘in holiday’ and ‘on holiday’. There is also the slight difference which omitting a word can make to a sentence. Compare ‘let’s arrange something after my holiday’ with ‘let’s arrange something for after my holiday’. The addition of 'for' in the second sentence changes the meaning from ‘let’s make arrangements when I return from holiday’ (the meaning of the first sentence) to ‘let’s meet after my holiday, but let’s make the arrangements now’.
